# Going Once

> One website owns this whole page. The price to take it falls every second until somebody does, and then it starts again at double what they paid. What you pay is not a rank, it is how long you are safe.

The price only goes down. Someone always takes it first.

## The mechanism

- One website owns the entire home page at a time. There is no list and no ranking.
- The price to take the page falls continuously. It halves every 2h, down to a floor of
  $10. Before anyone has ever taken it the page opens at $80.
- The moment somebody takes the page for $P, the price resets to $2P and begins falling again.
  There is no upper limit on the price. Paying more always buys more time, because the price
  restarts higher and takes longer to fall back to something somebody else will pay.
- So the amount paid is not a rank. It is how long that holder is expensive to remove.
- Prices are whole US dollars. Payment is one time, no subscription, no account.
- You pay the price quoted when checkout opened. Paying always takes the page, even if somebody
  else took it while the checkout was open. Money is never taken without the page changing hands.
- Entry is a single field: a website URL or an X @handle. The name, one-line description, icon and
  screenshot are read from the site itself.

## What it is not

- Not a leaderboard. Nobody is ranked by what they paid; there is only the current holder.
- Not an auction with an end. There is no close, no winner and no final price.
- Not a guarantee of traffic or of a duration. Somebody can take the page back a minute later, and
  they pay double for the privilege.

## Accounts

There are none. Looking at the page sets a random id in localStorage. Taking the page requires an
email only because the payment processor collects one. No password exists anywhere in the system.
